What does The HeArd do?

The HeArd provides creative ASL interpreting for theater, music, concerts, festivals, family shows, and live performances throughout Greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio.

Who does The HeArd serve?

The HeArd serves Deaf and hard of hearing audiences, theaters, venues, festivals, schools, music organizations, arts partners, and community members who support accessible performing arts.

How do I request ASL interpreting services for a performance or event?

Use the Request ASL Interpreting Services form on this website. Submitting the form is a request and does not confirm interpreter coverage. A member of The HeArd team will review the request and follow up.

How early should a venue request interpreters?

Please submit requests as early as possible. Performance interpreting often requires time for scheduling, preparation materials, rehearsal or sound check access, interpreter placement, lighting, and coordination with the venue.

Can The HeArd guarantee interpreter coverage?

Submitting a request does not guarantee coverage. The HeArd reviews each request based on interpreter availability, preparation needs, performance type, timing, and access needs.

What information should a venue provide when requesting interpreters?

Helpful information includes the show or event title, date, time, location, estimated run time, interpreter arrival time, script, lyrics, setlist, run of show, ticket link, box office contact, accessibility contact, billing contact, parking information, and interpreter placement or lighting notes.

Where should Deaf and hard of hearing patrons sit for an interpreted performance?

For the best view of the interpreters, patrons are encouraged to contact the venue box office before purchasing tickets and request seating near the interpreter section.

Can patrons request that a show be interpreted?

Yes. Patrons may contact The HeArd to share interest in a show or event. Community requests help show where access is needed, but The HeArd cannot guarantee that every requested performance will be interpreted.

Can I request a specific interpreter?

The HeArd coordinates interpreter assignments based on availability, preparation needs, performance type, team needs, and access needs. Specific interpreter requests may be considered but are not guaranteed.

Does The HeArd provide interpreting for concerts and music events?

Yes. The HeArd supports ASL access for theater, music, concerts, festivals, and other live performances when interpreter coverage can be coordinated.

How can I become an understudy with The HeArd?

Professional ASL interpreters interested in theater, music, and live performance may complete the Become an Understudy form. Understudy opportunities depend on the show, venue, production timeline, interpreter team, and access needs.

Are understudy opportunities paid?

Understudy opportunities are not guaranteed paid assignments. Availability and structure depend on the production and the needs of The HeArd.
