What is The HeArd?

The HeArd is a program of Theatrical Interpreting Services of Cleveland, Inc. It is a body of professional sign language interpreters who serve the TISC, Inc. mission by providing high-quality creative sign language interpretation to the public performing arts of Northeast Ohio.

TISC, Inc., doing business as The HeArd, is dedicated to bringing a greater Deaf presence to audiences by providing sign language interpretation at theatrical performances throughout Greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio.

What is TISC, Inc.?

Theatrical Interpreting Services of Cleveland, Inc. is the nonprofit organization that oversees the behind-the-scenes activities of The HeArd. Its volunteer board of trustees meets regularly in accordance with bylaws and supports projects, finances, partnerships, professional development, venue guidelines, promotional materials, the understudy program, Deaf audience engagement, and ways to give back to the Deaf community.

What TISC, Inc. Does

• Managing projects and financial activities connected to The HeArd
• Building partnerships between HeArd interpreters, Deaf mentors, and skilled sign consultants to support linguistic integrity
• Encouraging ongoing professional development for HeArd interpreters through workshops, conferences, and local signing events
• Developing guidelines for theatrical venues that contract HeArd interpreters for performance interpreting assignments
• Creating promotional and educational materials for the website, printed materials, and educational presentations
• Supporting the growth of theatrical interpreting through The HeArd's volunteer understudy program for professional interpreters
• Engaging Deaf audience members in conversation about their theater experience
• Finding ways to give back to the Deaf community, whose language, culture, and guidance shape this work
